Figure 2 of the article by Goetz et al, 2012 is used to generate figure 7.1. The images in the two figures are identical. Some of the labeling has been changed. Figure 7.1 has a label “insects/wildfire”, while figure 2 of the article has just “wildfire”. Explanation about Natural Variability, Moderate Severity and High Severity are in the caption of figure 2, while they are included in the labeling of figure 7.1. The techniques used in this article for deriving the MODIS Global Disturbance Index (MGDI) are from the paper by David J. Mildrexler, Maosheng Zhao, and Steven Running, 2009 - http://data.globalchange.gov/article/10.1016/j.rse.2009.05.016. Figure 5 of that paper shows the MGDI. The method for deriving MGDI is described in that paper as well.
